What we did with the old site

The Home Network Pro site originated back in 1998 as NERD Notes. The first publication was sent out on an old Tripod site (remember Tripod). This site ran for a few months and then the new Home Network Pro site was launched. The idea was simple: Provide ad-free, simple to use, information from many sources on the industry of home networking. Since that site was launched, home networking is now a huge industry with many differrent and new applications of the technology. The old site is still here, but it wil not be presented in the old format. You will be able to reach classic pages by following the links to the classic pages from the updated information that will be made available. So, if you liked the old site content and you need access to that content, then you only have to look for the classic links.

The home networking industry report

Tthe last few years haven't proved to be as successful for the home networking and home automation industry as one would have expected, but a predicted upswing is happening due largely in part to a more mature, user- friendly kind of industry. Initial expectations for the industry are starting to materialize. Standalone systems, such as home entertainment, lighting, HVAC and security systems are proving more popular. The standalone systems are easier to install, operate, maintain and understand. The difference between standalone systems and ones networked into a main system also highlights another facet of the industry affecting price points and earnings in the industry , a distinction between the standard off the shelf product and one customized for the end user. It's much easier to sell off the shelf. What is driving the market can be found in the installation of home theater systemsand home networking systems, which tend to be installed by people with a lot of home theater experience and network experience. Structured wiring installations are also another element of the industry which did not suffer under recent economic woes, but instead became a selling point for builders as new home sales soared and people flocked to the real estate markets in search of homes equipped with pre-wired home networks.. The home network is easier to install than systems of a few years ago and that has helped in the proliferation of home networks. Usability, reliability, security and access to high bandwidth Internet presence have helped to increase the use of home networks. The average household with a PC and dial-up connection to the Internet quickly giving away to multi-homed, multi-PC and multi-service networks that provide data, voice and even video services to the home user and the working professional. A large part of the increased use of home networks is due to telecommuting as well. The average home network user is no longer the super-techno geek that spends most of time debugging code and hacking. Today's home network user is more likely to be less technical, less knowledgeable and less capable of working out the details around the responsibilities of the home network.
